Four areas in the North Riding of Yorkshire, pictured opposite, were home to members of the Gale families. JAMES GALE (Living 1523) resided at Ainderby Steeple, WILLIAM GALE (ca. 1490 - 1557) was at Scruton, and WILLIAM GALE (Living 1500s) of Carthrop was at Burneston. Other generations of the family lived at Bedale. Due to the close proximity of these parishes it is likely that all of these families were related.

This page begins with
WILLIAM GALE (ca. 1490 - 1557) YEOMAN OF SCRUTON, who left descendants in Londonderry in the parish of Burneston. Researcher Rosamond Porter, deceased, noted large Gale concentrations in both Burneston and Leeds and believed that the families were connected. She also noted that the Gales of Leeds used the alias of Cooke. [SEE THE GEALES OF ENGLAND & IRELAND]

William Gale was bailiff for the Markenfield family of Scruton Manor and was probably a member of the family of James Gale. [SEE JAMES GALE OF THRINTOFT] The tree below was compiled from a variety of sources including information from Rosamond Porter and from the online site of Mr. William Suffolk of Southport, England. GALE-GEALE-COOKE FAMILIES
OF ENGLAND & IRELAND
I. WILLIAM GALE (ca. 1490 - 1557) YEOMAN OF SCRUTON married (1) MISS HALL and had several children. He married (2) ELIZABETH TENNANT (?? - 3/20/1588) and had four more children. He left a will dated 1555. Although a connection has not been determined, it is likely that William was of the familly of James Gale of Thrintoft, Yorkshire.

In 1310 John de Markenfield, Chancellor of the Exchequer, who
owned the Manor of Scruton, was the builder of Markenfield Hall, located near Ripon in North Yorkshire. In 1569 his descendant, Sir Thomas Markenfield, owned Scruton Manor and took part in the Rebellion of the Northern Earls, led by Catholic noblemen in the North of England in a failed attempt to replace Queen Elizabeth at the throne with Mary, Queen of Scots. As a result its leaders were executed and their properties, including Markenfield Hall, were confiscated by the Crown. William Gale was bailiff for the Markenfield family during this period.

Sir Thomas, who fled with others to Scotland, was sentenced in absentia to be executed. In 1572 a portion of the Markenfield property was granted to Sir Thomas Bowes, who sold it in 1575 to Thomas Danby Esq. In 1688 Sir Abstrubus Danby sold it to Dr. Thomas Gale, one of James Gale's descendants, who built
Scruton Hall on the property. Scruton Hall passed by marriage to the Coore family who held it until the 1950s when its woodlands, farms, park and Hall were sold as part of their estate. For more information on Scruton Hall see the Knox family website, Knoxetal.
WILLIAM GALE AND HIS FAMILY attended the parish church of St. Lambert's in Burneston, and his descendants may have been related to the families of James and George Gale of Yorkshire. Although William was of York, his family migrated to Monken Hadley, London, Middlesex and to Bushey in Hertfordshire.
