IN THE LATE 1400s, WILLIAM GALE (ca. 1490 - 1557) YEOMAN OF SCRUTON, was bailiff for the Markenfield family of Scruton Manor. Although a definite connection has
not been established, circumstantial evidence suggests that he was a member of the family of JAMES GALE (Living 1523) who resided at Ainderby Steeple. [SEE CHAPTER 2]
Gale researcher Rosamond Porter, deceased, noted large Gale concentrations in both Burneston and Leeds and believed that the families were connected. She also noted that
the Gales of Leeds used the alias of Cooke. [SEE CHAPTER 5] Also in the North Riding of Yorkshire was one WILLIAM GALE (Living 1500s) of Carthrop, Burneston. The
trees below were compiled from a variety of sources including information from Porter and from the online site of Mr. William Suffolk of Southport, England.

I. WILLIAM GALE (ca. 1490 - 1557) YEOMAN OF SCRUTON married (1) MISS HALL and (2) ELIZABETH TENNANT (?? -
3/20/1588). Children were born to both wives, and William left a will dated 8/31/1555 and probated 4/9/1557. He is said to have had a
brother, one HENRY GALE of Thrintoft.
William Gale was bailiff for the Markenfield family. In 1310 John de Markenfield, Chancellor of the Exchequer, who owned the
Manor of Scruton, was the builder of Markenfield Hall, located near Ripon in North Yorkshire. In 1569 his descendant, Sir Thomas
Markenfield, owned Scruton Manor and took part in the Rebellion of the Northern Earls, led by Catholic noblemen in the North of
England in a failed attempt to replace Queen Elizabeth at the throne with Mary, Queen of Scots. As a result its leaders were
executed and their properties, including Markenfield Hall, were confiscated by the Crown.
Sir Thomas, who fled with others to Scotland, was sentenced in absentia to be executed. In 1572 a portion of the Markenfield
property was granted to Sir Thomas Bowes, who sold it in 1575 to Thomas Danby Esq. In 1688 Sir Abstrubus Danby sold it to Dr.
Thomas Gale, one of James Gale's descendants, who built Scruton Hall on the property. Scruton Hall passed by marriage to the
Coore family who held it until the 1950s when its woodlands, farms, park and Hall were sold as part of their estate. For more
information on Scruton Hall see the Knox family website, Knoxetal.
WILLIAM GALE OF CARTHROP, PARISH OF BURNESTON, YORKSHIRE, may have been descended from William Gale of Scruton (above). The family attended the church of St.
Lambert's in Burneston, and although William was of York, his family migrated to Monken Hadley, London, Middlesex and to Bushey in Hertfordshire.
LEONARD GALE (ca. 1520 - 5/1/1571), another probable family member, resided at Newton House, Londonderry, near Lemming, Parish of Burneston, where he was buried. Newton
House is located 3 miles from Bedale near Exelby, Lemming, and Newton. Leonard married JANET (UNKNOWN) about 1546 and had a son, WILLIAM GALE (ca. 1546-47 - 4/9/1609)
of Burneston, who married on 9/9/1571 to ANN PARKINSON (?? - 11/26/1580) and had a son, THOMAS GALE.

II. LANCELOT GALE (?? - Will 1566) OF SCRUTON PARISH was born to William Gale and an unknown wife. Lancelot married (UNKNOWN) and had two children.
Lancelot Gale left a will dated 1566, listed in the Registry of the Archdeaconry of Richmond, in which he spelled his name GAILE and referred to his son as William GAYLL. He made a
bequest to his wife but did not name her. He did name his son William and daughter Margaret; brother Rafe Skipton [this was his brother-in-law, husband of his sister Elizabeth]; his
uncle, Parson Christofer (sic) Hall of Newsom; Uncle Robert Teannent (sic); and his brother Thomas Gaile (sic) who left a will at Greatham in 1581. He further stated, "I will that my
frends and my neighbors that do offer with one the day of my buryall have a dyner at my house, and I wilbe keapt up one day and one nyght, yf God will permit, unto suche tyme my
frends be gaythered together…" His gave his "son William Gayll my swerd and bucter with all my buckes [books] and especially one bucke called the Terence and forty shillings of
money…" Lancelot requested that he be buried in the parish church at Scruton near the grave of his father. The church, dedicated to St. Radegund (Ca. AD520 - 587, France) who was
associated with the foundation of a convent at Poiteers, France, is one of only five churches in English villages to be dedicated to her memory.
